There can be nothing more basic in the life of a Christian but to know God and to love other people. John the apostle writes to the church and tells them that the fullness of personal and corporate joy is to know God. Nobody arrives at happiness or joy for that matter by aiming at it. Joy and happiness is a by-product of something else. Joy is a by product of knowing God. But what does it mean to know God according to 1 John 1?
